ZIFF 2008- the reels are rolling

Friday evening saw the launch of the 11th edition of the Zimbabwe International Film Festival at a function held at the 7 Arts Theatre in Harare.
Over 300 people attended the opening ceremony whose highlight was the screening of the American film “The Visitor” starring Zimbabwean actress Danai Gurira.
This year’s festival is themed “The Art of Film, Film as Art.”
Festival Director, Nakai Matema, explains: “This year we acknowledge how film incorporates every other genre of the arts, from the literary, to music, to visual and to the performing arts. Film encompasses and relies on all these forms of art, and so this year we celebrate and show our respect for our fellow artistes.”
The ten day festival (5 – 14 September) will see the screening of 28 feature films, 17 short films and 8 documentaries.
Some of the notable films in this year’s line up are:
- the Dutch film “The Bird Can’t fly” by world renowned Dutch writer, theatre director and artist, Threes Anna, who actually began the script here in Zimbabwe.
- Brazilian film “Black Box” directed by Marcel Izidoro who will be in attendance courtesy of the Brazilian Embassy.
- John Kani’s “Nothing but the Truth” from South Africa
- “The Cricket Girl” from Japan
- Canada’s “Missing Victor Pellerin”
A number of workshops centered on experimental film and cinema will run during the festival.

On The Zimbo Jam- Samantha Tshuma Crowned Miss Tourism Zimbabwe 2010If it had been up to the crowd, Bulawayo beauty Samantha Tshuma, would have been crowned the winner during the very first round of the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe pageant last night (6 Feb 2010). She had the packed auditorium of the Harare International Conference Centre cheering for her from the very beginning of the evening. The judges agreed with them it seems and Samantha was unanimously crowned Miss Tourism Zimbabwe 2010.
- Lukundo Nalungwe Wins Face of Africa 201022 -year old Zambian model, Lukundo Nalungwe, was last night crowned the M-Net Face of Africa 2010 at a glittering event held at the Eko Hotel Exhibition Centre in Lagos, Nigeria. The business administration student fought off stiff competition from a bevy of continental beauties, including Zimbabwe’s own Tholakele Dhlamini and Rosanna Hall, who made it to the top ten.
