Hats off to THE PSYKOZ and co.
I braced the chilly Friday night of September 12 to attend the Zimbabwe International Film Festival (ZIFF) Short Film Project Opening night in Harare. I was so curious to know what was going to be screened or rather what our own local writers, directors and actors had in store for us. What I watched was not bad at all. For me, only two movies were in a class of their own- brilliant. These are Zimbabwe The Best Country and Akakodzera Ndiani?
The Short Film Project (SFP) included a total of five films.
The movie which got most people off their seats, bursting into laughter was written by THE PSYKOZ Of Prince Edward High School and directed by Patience Gamu Tawengwa.
Zimbabwe The Best Country, is a hilarious musical extravaganza depicting the trials and tribulations of living in present day, told through the eyes of Hugh, a man returning to Zimbabwe from the UK after many years a way. In the course of one day Hugh endures countless escapades trying to acclimatize to life in Zimbabwe.
In the movie, Hugh experiences queus, corruption and greed. I’m not an arts or film guru, but you better watch this one. It’s Zimbabwean everyday life being told hilariously and certainly some very good acting from the Prince Edward guys.
The other film is Akakodzera Ndiani? written by Musha Langton Chari and directed by Yeukai Ndarimani. Amai and Baba Mombeshora are very excited that their son Timothy is back visiting from the Disapora after many years. They are even more excited that he is bringing his future wife to meet them all. That is until she arrives and is not quite what they were expecting. This is a comedic tale of the clash of cultures, tradition versus modernity, and of parents learning to let go of their adult children.
The other movies are Mbavha Gororo written and directed by Garikai Chawasarira. Heart of Hearts written by Gerald Banda and directed by JAAG. Love Abstract written by Michael Banda and directed by Allan Muwani.
