Know what you have

Now they are ripe mangoes,
Yellow with promise.

Time after time
Gatherers have missed the yellow gaze

On their way to thickets of banana joy
Have sunk in the swamp of disappointment.

These mangoes here
Have not tasted the palms of hungry hands

These mangoes here
Have not been told how ripe they are;

They sit thus, wondering:
“Ripe? What are these peaches talking about?”
