Air Morgan can't do it alone. He needs our help.

I remember watching a basketball match between China and the United States during the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The US players were very physical and ran circles round the Chinese team. There was so much slam dunking from the US side that I started wondering if the Chinese were capable of showing us even ONE slam dunk. Just when I thought it would never happen, one of the Chinese players broke out of defence, did some amazing dribbling, engaged his thigh rockets and took off into dunk heaven.
I cheered enthusiastically.

But politics is not a basketball game. MDC and Morgan Tsvangirai cannot slam dunk the goals. There is no way they can shoot three pointers or dribble the ball across the court to score a winning point just before the game ends while we stare breathlessly and adoringly on the sidelines.

For starters, the game has only just begun. Spectators need to be prepared for a long match in which they are active participants.

People are expecting to see food in the shops and a sudden reduction in inflation. Won’t happen. Not at the speed of a dunk. People are expecting to see Bob stripped of his uniform and sent to the subs bench. Won’t happen, not in the way it acts out in our heads.

This is a game of tact and involvement. Brace yourself for some shocks. Pray hard and push harder. While you’re at it, put on a pair of Air Morgans. You’ll need them to cushion the landings…
