Makosi Musambasi on her 28th birthday
BIG Brother 5 star Makosi Musambasi celebrated her 28th birthday on Tuesday. She talks to New Zimbabwe.com editor Mduduzi Mathuthu about her celebrity lifestyle, an impending “boob job” and her wacky plan to be Michael Jackson for a day:
How does it feel being 28?
I must say I don’t feel any different. I don’t feel any older. I certainly feel a bit younger than I was last year (chuckles). I am also a bit more mature, a bit wiser, more confident in myself and body; and a bit wealthier. I realise that the older you get, the more confident you are. And I have learnt that if you do things for money, you don’t make money, you have to be passionate about something and the benefits flow from there.
What sort of presents did you get for your birthday?
I got a new Blackberry Bold, and quite a few phones from friends who call me and I don’t answer. I get their message! I got a few handbags, clothes, a lot of flowers and shopping vouchers. A special man bought me an Audi Q7.
Wow, isn’t that an expensive car?
It’s not very expensive, it’s about £47 000, which isn’t too much! I’m giving him stuff worth more than £47 000. If the car was a present from the Roman Catholic Church, I would really feel bad because they could use the money for worthy causes around the world. But it’s from my boyfriend!
If you look back at the last three years since Big Brother, do you have any regrets?
I wouldn’t change a thing. Maybe just after Big Brother, a year after the show, I would have changed my life but things have turned around. When I started off, this whole fame thing was fascinating and I made a lot of mistakes in the process. Now I am a bit older and content with the way I am and content with people around me. I don’t know where I would be if I hadn’t done Big Brother, so I am very grateful for everything I went through, the good and the bad. The good gave me courage, and the bad made me stronger.
Looking inside from the outside, people have this picture of celebrities as glamorous, trouble-free folks. Is it really like that?
Trust me the more you get known, the more stressed you get. When you go to town without make-up, and people think you don’t quite look the airbrushed picture they saw in the magazine, they think you are broke and worse. Sometimes you just want to be yourself, but people don’t see it that way… you become prisoner to a distorted idea people have of you and you have to keep up appearances.
Every time I do something, my family is worried. You find other famous people with bodyguards… having bodyguards is not a glamorous thing, sometimes you just want to be alone and not have someone knowing the noise you make when you piss and how your s*** smells!
Part of the trouble is celebrities do love attention at times but unfortunately it’s not like a tap that you turn on when you want the limelight and off when you want your privacy. So you have to live with the bad times as well. But I guess the good times compensate the bad times.
You have been linked to several men in the past. On your 28th birthday, do you entertain thoughts of settling down and starting a family?
Settling down is not about how old you are, it’s just coming across the right person. There is a guy I am seeing at the moment, God willing if it works out… everybody wants family and children. I want all that but I am not under pressure, when it’s right it will happen.
You are a former cardiac nurse of course, your last permanent job. Do you ever miss the ward?
I can see how much I enjoyed my job, how it was good to save life. Now I save life in different ways – by entertaining people. I would like to lie and say I do miss being a nurse, but the truth is I don’t. I cannot say I regret being a nurse, I am glad I was, but I want that stage of my life to stay where it is, I don’t wanna go back there!
You have said in the past you want to reduce your boobs because they are too heavy and give you a terrible backache. Is that still under consideration?
I did think of that sometime, but now I am happy with them. They are still big, but the only concern at the moment is that they are losing their fight with gravity. I think at some point I will tuck them in… just help them defy gravity, but not make them smaller. I will have a boob job soon, probably for my 30th birthday.
If you were invisible for a day, what would you get up to?
I would be Michael Jackson. I want to find out why he turns up for shopping in pyjamas, whether he is really white and how it feels to be the most famous man in world. Michael Jackson to me is always going to be an enigma, he is such a mystery. It’s either I become him for that day or just float around in his house, following him around when he lifts his body, and see his private parts as well.
You have been very active in charity work. What’s your newest project?
I am working on a plan to build a school in Africa, because I think education is freedom. I will update you on that.
You have a few political ideas and have been known to express them. What do you think of the situation in Southern Africa, both in South Africa and Zimbabwe?
I really hope it’s not the case but I fear South Africa is going to be in a lot of trouble. I don’t mean to judge Jacob Zuma but what I fear is that he will do to South Africa in six months what Robert Mugabe did to Zimbabwe in 28 years.
Following the power sharing deal in Zimbabwe, I think that our country will pick itself up soon. We were rock bottom a couple of months ago, but I feel some excitement and really believe we are gaining momentum, going back where we should be as the chosen people of Africa. I do believe Zimbabweans are the chosen people!
You haven’t been to Zimbabwe for several years. What one place would you be keen to visit when you go back?
The Great Zimbabwe. There is a spiritual connection there — it’s a very surreal environment, not hyped up and not superficial at all. It is the same as it was when they made it. It is for me much more spectacular than the Victoria Falls in its purity. Also, I would be seeing a lot of my parents who are coming here by the way next month, I hope they can bring me a piece of Great Zimbabwe.
