Zimbabwe, my love
I
When the Sun rises in Zimbabwe
The fish-eagle calls …
And its call echoes across the waters.
But who calls the Sun
Who hears a newborn African child’s cry?
Who hears this cry of a new Zimbabwean dream?
II
Hush my child, says mother
Here, feel my warmth
Let me wrap you in my love
Hush! My hope!
Suckle now in silence
And nourish our dream
For the sake of your life, our life.
III
For I feel the urgency of your growth
And feel no longer the pain of your birth
I can feel the final release of a new dawn.
You! Zimbabwe, my love
IV
Now, the Sun sets
To the rhythm of our bodies
That seek rest from the toils of our labours
But wait! The moon is rising
The spirit now stirs … And a new life now springs
A new life.
Listen! Feel it!
V
As the drum’s beat in the moonrise
Our spirits shall soar
Beckoned by our silvery dreams,
Awakened by the roar of the tyrannical lion
VI
And as all life stills
There shall be hope. Yes, hope!
Awake my child! Awake Zimbabwe!
A new day has dawned.
It’s yours.
