Tom Deuschle launches reformation blog

Senior Pastor of Celebration Ministries International, Pastor Tom Deuschle today launched his blog entitled Reformation Report.

Pastor Tom, and his wife Pastor Bonnie, preach the message of reformation in a church which now spans four continents: Africa, America, Asia and Europe. New churches have been recently opened in South Africa, Kenya, Kuala Lumpur, London, Botswana and in other countries.

He plans to use the blog to drive the reformation message home.

Pastor Tom left the United States of America over twenty-five years ago to start a church in Zimbabwe. The church met in various locations around Harare until the completion of the Celebration Centre in Borrowdale. It took the church SEVEN years of negotiations to buy the land and then another SEVEN years to build the word class facility.

In his first blog post Pastor Tom likens the current world economic crisis to what has been taking place in Zimbabwe for the last ten or so years. The post begins:

In recent times, the world has witnessed events that many had never contemplated could be possible. Oil prices soared, real estate markets tumbled and many lost fortunes as institutions once considered unshakable collapsed. It now seems true that if only conventional wisdom is applied, these events are likely to recur in the future. Is this not the time to look at some underlying issues and begin to dialogue about reform?

In the nation of Zimbabwe, we have been facing, at a local level, what the world at large has recently begun to struggle with.

This is an interesting initiative by Tom Deuschle, I’m sure as someone who has been in Zimbabwe for over 2 decades his insights will offer a welcome perspective. The name of the blog is rather puzzling to me as it’s not exactly clear what needs to be reformed but I guess with time this will be exposed. Also reading the first post on the blog I found this statement not consistent with my own observations: “As a student of religion and history, I also see patterns of progress in nations that have internalized values based on Judeo-Christian principles”. I’ve heard Christians often making similar statements that tend to link the national development of a nation with Judeo-Christian principles, however when one looks at the world not all ‘developed’ nations have a Judeo-Christian heritage e.g Japan. It’s slightly worrying that the 10 comments on the blog are as those of breathless cheerleaders. I’m often worried when we follow our leaders with an uncritical mind; as Zimbabweans I think this is a lesson we have learnt very well.
