I, Too

I, too

I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes.
But I laugh
And eat well
And grow strong.

Tomorrow
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody ‘ll dare
Say to me
“Eat in the Kitchen,”
Then.

Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed -

I, too, am America.

—–Langston Hughes

Remember the time when Chris Rock said something to the effect,How America has changed, when the top golfer is Black (Tiger) and the top rapper is white (Emenim)?

Langston Hughes was affectionately known as the Poet Laureate of Harlem and today, guess who is coming tohave dinner at the White House? He too, sings America, scion of man from a continent whose blood, sweat and tears built America, and for far too long American refused to see this Other.

Eish, how America has changed when the Man in the White House is a Brother who “nopbody can dare say “Eat in the Kitchen’ now.

Never buy into the stereotypes or boxes that people/ society paint you in. If you live your life following the footsteps of others you will never achieve greatness. In 2 years an unknown African American 1st term Junior Senator with the middle name ‘Hussein’ has ascended the US presidency. If the junior senator from Illinois had asked you “Should I run for the presidency?” 2 years ago, what would your answer have been?
