Tsitsi Dangarembga and the Greenies story

Tsitsi Dangarembga accepts a surprise gift at the IIFF closing ceremony on Saturday evening (29 Nov)
When Tsitsi was a little girl she joined the Brownies. Her young sister Rudo was upset that she too could not join as she was still too young.
Tsitsi came up with an idea. She would start a new group called the “Greenies” which her little sister could be a part of. So she told all her friends about this new group and had them pay 10 cents to join.
When the parents heard about it they were not happy at all and they demanded that the money be paid back and they would not let her go ahead with her plan. Thus came to a shattering end the Greenies dream.
“Thank you for letting me do something now,” said Tsitsi at the closing ceremony of the International Images Film Festival for Women on Saturday evening (29 Nov 08), after telling that little story.
She was receiving a surprise gift from fellow organisers of the festival in acknowledgement of her hard work and dedication.
The ceremony saw the presentation of awards for the best films at the festival and incorporated the Ndichirimupenyu Awards which acknowledge the contribution of various women to society.
I must say, I was impressed by IIFF this year. The festival is growing and the audiences at the various screenings I attended were bigger than most I’ve seen at previous editions of the festival. The organisation was great and the glittering awards ceremony made me proud to be Zimbabwean. Way to go WFOZ!!!
