Of Mercs, Perks & Promises
Some say politics is a dirty game. But, is it so? Some say it is ’survival of the fittest’. I am currently observing what has been transpiring with the Zimbabwean inclusive government. My worry is from the day the ministers and MPs were involved with the new government, there was a ‘rush’ to organise mercs and perks- though there are reports that there are difficulties in addressing this issue. As we all know, ministers and other top government officially live ‘large’. Today, I visited the Herald website and read a headline-RBZ pledges cars for MPs. Well, I am not saying that MPs don’t deserve to have cars, but for now is it a matter of urgency? And to make matters worst, I don’t think these are ordinary cars, but of course top of the range (though the articles hints they are second hand). What boggles my mind is that….what about the ordinary man?
The one who was toyi-toying for you, and voted you into that top-government position. Some say, ‘Speak like a politician’ entailing one should use persuasive language/ tone and in most cases lie. Thus what happens when it comes to ‘most politicians’ promises. They won’t deliver as they promised. Does this happen elsewhere? That government officials only think of mercs, perks and forget the ordinary man- who is suffering at the moment. With the situation we are in, can’t even one minister/MP say hey,”Can you please shelve the mercs, and perhaps cut our perks by half so we can feed our people first?”
