National Journalistic And Media Awards (NJAMA): Promoting Professionalism And Freedom With Responsibility

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists is now inviting entries for the 2008 National Journalistic and Media Awards (NJAMA) to be held on the 31st of July 2009. Three articles should be submitted for each category. This limit can only be waived if the articles are part of a series of stories in a campaign or investigation. Members of the public are also invited to nominate articles that deserve consideration for prizes. The articles to be considered must have been published between January 1, and December 31, 2008, and only ZUJ members should enter the competition. In electronic media reporters/producers are required to present three articles on VHS tape, VCD/DVD format for each category. In radio programmes, stories should be presented on tape or CD. Names of the judges will once again be made public at the dinner gala where awards will be presented. The judges decision will be final. This year’s event will be running under the theme: Media Reforms: Towards a Free, Transparent and Responsible Media.
Judging criteria:
(a) The values of the story uphold(i.e) the impact and positive change or continuity a story/campaign has brought about to the community.
(b) Originality, investigation, research, effort and persistence in exposing corruption, ills in the society leading to the correction of wrongs and creation of transparency.
(c) Completeness: fairness, accuracy and balanced reporting
(d) Information Values: Is the story educating, creating critical awareness and entertaining.
(e) Depth of knowledge of the subject, command of the language and use of metaphor, prose, imagery, satire, syntax and lexicon.
