Local Businesses sponsor “Flip Floppers” Hip Hoppers to go to Cape Town

Members of the Zimbabwe business community have come together to sponsor the finalists of the Zimbabwe Battle Of The Year (BOTY) 2009 Dance Competition to go to the Africa final in Cape Town, South Africa. BOTY is an annual dance competition featuring B-Boy crews from all over the world.

The team representing Zimbabwe is made up of four local dance groups Flip Floppers (Harare), Most Wanted (Bulawayo), Inmates (Harare) and 116 (Harare) that competed at the national BOTY competition held by Jibilika at the 7 Arts theatre in Avondale Harare on the 1st of August. The license for BOTY Zimbabwe is held by Jibilika Entertainment. Jibilika was started in June 2007 by Plot Mhako, with a vision to enhance socio economic development through art especially all genres of dance.

Six African nations will be presenting their B-Boy finalists to compete for the BOTY Africa Champion at the finals in Cape Town. The African final begins on the 27th of August with dance workshops for the first two days and the actual competition kicking off on the 29th of August. The presentation of awards will occur on the 30th of August. The winning crew will proceed to the International finals in Germany against 18 other continental champions from all over the world. This final event will be held on the 7th of October 2009 at Volkswagenhalle, Braunschweig.

Details of the Zimbabwe team and their sponsorship are:

South African Airways- is sponsoring the teams tickets to Cape Town.

Spar is sponsoring the team water for their rehearsals.

Zuva- a leading local fashion house is providing clothing and grooming for the team.

World Wide Scholarship (WWS) - is providing track suits.

Faith Wear- is providing their competition attire (2 sets plus tracksuit).

Creative Computers- is providing cash for travel purposes.

Celebration Ministries International- and its members have provided food, water, cosmetics, a rehearsal venue and cash gifts to support the team in their preparations for the Africa final competition with rigorous practice sessions at the Celebration Centre in Borrowdale Harare.

B-Boy is an acrobatic form of Hip Hop dancing originating from the United States of America. B-Boy dance groups are known as crews. As this form of dance has spread all over the world, it has been influenced by cultural nuances.

The International BOTY competition provides a platform for B-Boy dance form and Hip Hop culture in general and an opportunity for all participants to express themselves in a peaceful and non-segregated environment where the only thing they are judged for is their ability to dance. This event has been running for ten years.
