I am looking for Memory Gomwe
I am looking for a friend of mine from the University of Zimbabwe, when I attended back in 1999 as an exchange student from the United States. Her name was Memory Gomwe (if I recall correctly she was engaged at the time, so her current surname may be different).
I believe that her father was a schoolteacher in Chegutu and I am certain that she was a Shumba (from what she told me about Shona culture). I understand if there is insufficient information to find her, but I am trying as many resources as possible to track her down. I humbly ask that, should you have any information on her or her family, you pass it along. I would be in your greatest debt. Thank you for your consideration.

Zimbabwe Law reloaded
Filed under: Family, Friendship, Community, How Zimbabwe can be better, Politics

The various statutes that make up the law of Zimbabwe are public documents. So are judgements from the country’s High Courts and the Supreme Court. The challenge though, has always been access to these documents, until now. A new online initiative now makes all of these documents freely available.
Through a new website, www.law.co.zw, researchers, law students, lawyers and Human Rights activists can now access the legal information they need, at no cost.
The website also features a legal resources directory which lists various lawyers and legal service providers in the country.
The site has been going through a testing phase for its first month of operation and is now open to the public. “There are still other areas of content to be filled in,” said a spokes person for the project managers, “it’s an ongoing project, as new court cases come up, we will add them. We also plan to increase the scope of the site to archiving newspaper articles that cover legal issues.”
Investing in an ageing society in Zimbabwe
Filed under: Family, Friendship, Community, I was just thinking
IT IS UNDISPUTABLE THAT the value of older persons for society is strong and society should rely increasingly on the strong social experience and wisdom of older persons. It is true that the social clock never stops ticking and therefore aging is a natural process. Of paramount importance in Zimbabwe, are the issues affecting old people, their plight and creating an enabling environment through which family members are positioned to provide more for older people. In traditional Zimbabwean culture, elderly care was provided by adult children, who gave all the care and support to their ageing and frail parents, but due to economic hardships, this may not always be possible. During recent years Zimbabwe has faced acute economic challenges which have caused societal shifts in living arrangements and family structures and therefore ageing poses a challenge in Zimbabwe. The biggest liars
Filed under: Family, Friendship, Community, I was just thinking
My friend Lucia otherwise affectionately known just as Lulu amongst my group of friends is the best cook I have ever known. Not that she is a tough contender for Jamie Oliver; No. The only thing she can make properly is a not-so-good cup of tea which makes you ask, aren’t there a lot of six year olds who can make better things? However, despite her kitchen woes, there is one thing that I know my friend can do well, cook lies. The lies that she tells are capable of up seating the best politicians from their thrones, Obama included.
Lulu has met Joe Thomas, flirted with Chris Brown, stayed in China and can speak Cantonese to prove it (bits and pieces, yes-something she learnt from her Chinese boyfriend). I mean, she has done everything that is so cool that some of us who have parents in poor retirement can only do in our dreams-wildest that is. Tell ma, how many Zimbabwean kids can one meet on the road who have a private pilot’s license let alone a drivers license? Read more
A visit to the Embassy
Filed under: Family, Friendship, Community, Relationships, Zimbabwean diaries
I paid a visit to the Norwegian embassy today with a letter to hand to the ambassador. I spoke to his secretary and then the head of the VISA section. They called up the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration who insisted that they are working on the case and- here this- I can expect to wait for anything up to 10 months! Read more
