Student life

The sun sets so beautifully into the horizon. The ordinary person marvels at the wonder of the glory of God, yet to the student who is at a university that is about to close its doors, who slept on an empty stomach yesterday,  the setting of the sun does not signify anything. All he askes is a simple innocent question, ‘Is God mverled at my pain?’

This year I am certainly praising God for making me able to pay US$2500 for my college tuition which with current situation that our country is in is a fortune. As I praise God I know there is someone who is cursing the blessing of the burning syndrome that made his poor parents afford to send him to one of Zimbabwe’s most expensive universities. Why shouldn’t he, when his school fees drained everything from their coofers that all they could manage to give their son for school was a little forex which today seems to be also affected by the sporadic runaway inflation that has brougth our country down? Zimbabwe: Global Fund accusations a blow to AIDS response

November 5, 2008 · Posted in Opinion, Analysis, Advice, Zimbabwe, For & About · Comment

Reports that the Zimbabwe an government allegedly swindled Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM) money is a severe blow to the country’s tottering response to the three killer diseases. If the matter is not urgently resolved, there is no doubt that it will influence massive donor flight from the country, and imperil the community response to AIDS, TB and malaria.

Already, Zimbabwe’s chances to be considered for a US 188 million dollar grant have been put into jeopardy. According to New York Times, the government of Zimbabwe allegedly spent US 7,3 million dollars donated by the Global Fund on other things and has failed to honour requests to return the money.

“The actions by Zimbabwe have deprived the organization … of resources it needs and damaged efforts to expand life-saving treatment,” the New York Times quoted John Parsons, the Global Fund’s inspector-general. “Zimbabwe’s actions also jeopardize a more ambitious $188 Global Fund grant to Zimbabwe”.

With an ever-spiraling hyperinflation current estimated at 231 million percent, Zimbabwe’s social and economic indicators are horrendous to say the least.

The public health system has all but crumbled with major public hospitals having to be closed due to lack of resources. A widely condemned election in June in which President Robert Mugabe ran alone and emerged as a victor further worsened Zimbabwe’s image as an international pariah. Read more

Diary of an HIV-positive man

This article by Beatrice Tonhodzayi appeared in the Herald on 11 October 2008 and on Kubatana.net. I was moved when I read it.

He has been living with HIV for the past five years. He took the test after his wife of 20 years had tested positive. Tamuka (not real name) says that day will forever be imprinted on his mind because it was the last time he was to ever have a conversation that lasted more than an hour with the woman he is married to. “She has hated me since then. She lives in the same house with me only because there is nowhere else she can go to. We don’t laugh together, and we rarely talk to each other. We talk “AT” each other only when it is absolutely necessary - mostly about money or the children, he said.” Read more

Yes, our tears stem

From your success

& your smiles

Are inspired

By our sickness,

But your nest

Must not be nourished
By the warm blood

Of my womb

& your breasts

Should not be fattened

By the flesh of sinless infants. Read more
