The source of selflessness

Hello!

Phanuel Muverengwi here…

I hope that I find you in the best of health.

In my previous installment I asked the question: WHY DO YOU WANT TO LIVE LONG? I argued in the installment that there are people who live long, in terms of number of years, yet their long lives benefit nobody. I also argued that some people have lived very short lives but managed to bring lots of benefits to others in that short space of time. I might just as well argue that the short lives lived by such people are in reality longer than the long lives lived by some, in terms of value.

I went on to state that a truly rewarding life is one spent in selflessness, not selfishness. Before departing, I asked you a question which goes, “What is the single attribute without which one cannot be selfless?” I hope that you now have the answer to this question. Read more

How God arrested me

To say the truth, I was completely puzzled when God arrested me.

It had never come to my mind that God was all this time trailing me. You might be in the same situation today. You’ve got to keep in mind that God is trailing you and will not give up on you. But you need to come to a point of being attentive for you to hear and heed the call. If you become too busy about too many things you might miss that which is most important to you. I will walk you through my personal experience just to prove that there are several ways that God could get hold of straying people.

I graduated from the University of Zimbabwe in 1991 after obtaining a Bsc. Honours Degree in Economics. When I was still at college I thought that I would get a job soon after completing my studies. I became even more convinced about this when I passed well in the final examinations; I do not, however, mean that passing well was a new experience for me. Read more

Greetings to Zimbabwean friends, from Darin Newberry

While I was in Zimbabwe, from 1982 through 1986, as the son of Assemblies of God missionaries David and Cheryl Newberry, I had the opportunity to attend Vainona High School for four years, and attended local churches and periodically participated in Scripture Union youth functions held around the country, through the end of 1986.

I have maintained contact with several friends I met during that time of my life, and I welcome the opportunity to become re-acquainted with others I knew. People do change over time, hopefully for the better, and I anticipate some happy reunions in time to come, with some of you I once knew. Read more

There are no Christians

My roommate at college was always praying. He prayed when he got up in the morning. He prayed when he came in at lunchtime. He woke up at 3am every other morning to go out to the fields to pray with some of his church mates. He would meet with these church mates at least twice a week in the evenings for prayer meetings or bible readings in the room.

But my roommate was filthy. If he bathed three times a week, that was a good week. If he did his laundry once a month I was lucky.  His wardrobe resembled the scene of an atomic bombing.  Dirty clothes were thrown in there in a not very pleasant mixture with exercise books, library books, shoes, newspapers, unfinished meals, Christian literature, and other paraphernalia. It depends on whose hands it is in

This reflection has become a revelation which has crowned the importance of activities, talents and above all messages to all who see the glory and the power of God manifested in people’s lives. Let me give an example: a tennis racket in my hands may not mean much, but the same tennis racket in Venus William’s hand is worth a Wimbledon championship, and even a world championship. Read more
