The 16 Days Campaign- background and 2009 theme

Zimbabwean women artists have come together over the last three years to old a 16 Days Concert. This year the concert takes place on 28 November at its traditional venue, the Book Cafe. Here is some background to the 16 days concept:

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) at Rutgers University in 1991.  Participants chose the dates, November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women, and December 10, International Human Rights Day, in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a human rights violation. Dudu Manhenga

On Wednesday 11 November, DUDU MANHENGA launches her third exciting recording ‘TOWARDS ALIGNMENT’ at The Mannenberg in Fife Avenue.  Another colourful afro jazz adventure, the latest offering is a double CD of a top-quality live recording of some of Zimbabwe’s best of that genre, made in Zimbabwe.

Towards Alignment was recorded from ‘Solo Encounters with Dudu Manhenga’ over four days at the beautiful REPS theatre stage in March 2009, a daring move by the young diva to get closer to her audience in a setting where the finer nuances of her music could be more fully appreciated.  “I feel more alive on stage than in the studio, and the studio does not allow for that spark of spontaneity - an occasional joke, or sharing of my life experiences - like I am able to do during live performances” she said.

The hidden challenge of a live recording, of course, is that there is no room for error, and the first recording has to be the best recording; it cannot be repeated in the live setting.  As evidenced on the CD, the live performances revealed Dudu reaching a new level of delivery, a new high in quality, the achievement of a production of international standard - something of which Zimbabwe can be proud.  Read more

Clare Nyakujara- Jazz Has a New Face

On Friday 6 February (2009) The Mannenberg Jazz Club proudly welcomes Clare Nyakujara and The Other Four for an exciting performance of afro jazz at the Fife Avenue late-night venue which features Zimbabwean jazz artists regularly. Clare will perform under the banner of the Female Literary, Arts & Music Enterprise (FLAME), a Pamberi Trust project.

Every child dreams of being a star and Clare was no exception, starting out at the age of 10 in the church choir, and soon making her way to ‘the front’. In 2002 she became exposed to different types of music and found herself drawn to jazz after listening to Zimbabwean artists of different jazz styles – Luck St Blues, Dudu Manhenga & Color Blu, and The Other Four. Over time she joined Dumi Ngulube & Amagents, Mateo (of ‘Pamuhacha’ fame) and Dino Mudondo, on backing vocals, performing with them at HIFA, the annual Winter Jazz Festivals, club and corporate gigs, and giving vocal support to other up and coming young groups in the capital. THE ‘FEEL-GOOD’ POETRY SLAM
The Book Café, Harare, Zimbabwe

Sat 01 Nov 2008, 2-5pm
Harare’s Book Café will be blazing hot on Saturday 01 November with the monthly ‘House of Hunger Poetry Slam’ from 2-5pm, giving poets a platform to express themselves freely and explicitly through the spoken word.

The theme for November is ‘Giving each other a boost’ – poetry that feels good and leaves the listener with renewed energy to embrace each day, despite the mad man-made challenges Zimbabweans are facing as a people. “Life is tough, times are terribly hard and we need to give each other a boost; to celebrate the love and strength we give to each other in our daily lives,” said Mandla Ncube, project officer for Pamberi Trust which hosts the slam.
