Act your way to success
“… A nap here, a nap there, a day off here, a day off there, sit back and take it easy-do you know what comes next? Just this: You can look forward to a dirt poor life with poverty as your permanent house guest.’ Proverbs 24:30-34(The Message Bible)
The most horrendous temptation that haunts humanity today is the temptation to sit back, relax and let nature take its course. Sadly, some of our spiritual leaders have also come to accept this and are always claiming “God has ruled”. As a result, this has inhibited humanity’s ability to grow because when we don’t act, we are bound to shrink.
Each one of us has dreams, dreams to be successful, dreams to be healthy, dreams to have a wonderful marriage, to be loved, to love, to have wonderful kids, the list is endless. Dreams are a natural gift from God and he gives them in huge proportions. It is however up to us to act on those dreams and bring them to fruition. It’s a two way thing; God gives you dreams and you act upon those dreams. Read more
The source of selflessness
Hello!
Phanuel Muverengwi here…
I hope that I find you in the best of health.
In my previous installment I asked the question: WHY DO YOU WANT TO LIVE LONG? I argued in the installment that there are people who live long, in terms of number of years, yet their long lives benefit nobody. I also argued that some people have lived very short lives but managed to bring lots of benefits to others in that short space of time. I might just as well argue that the short lives lived by such people are in reality longer than the long lives lived by some, in terms of value.
I went on to state that a truly rewarding life is one spent in selflessness, not selfishness. Before departing, I asked you a question which goes, “What is the single attribute without which one cannot be selfless?” I hope that you now have the answer to this question. Read more
It’s not how well you say it
When the cock crowed, euphoria filled the land. Five year plans were brandied about with enthusiasm, gusto and the future seemed bright. We looked beyond our borders and thought, just like the South Africans do now, “Thank God we are not like those countries up north.”
When Mozambiquean refugees sought haven from the RENAMO stoked civil strife in their homeland, we were prone to treat them with contempt, calling them mamoskeni” while we gloated in our own sense of wealth, success, stability and invincibility.
We laughed at our Zambian brothers and their “worthless” Kwacha (back then) and how they needed wheelbarrows to carry enough money to buy a loaf of bread… Little did we know that bearer cheques lurked in the shadows or that a new currency would have the suffer a fate similar to that of the bearer cheques in a short, short period. Can you write?
As soon as my first book hit the market, I started receiving e-mail messages, phone calls and short messages on my mobile phone from people from various places and backgrounds. Some just wanted to congratulate me. Some wanted advice. It would have helped me a lot if I had received messages from critics as well, but it seems critics have decided to keep their opinions to themselves.
It is true that critics, especially those who are strangers, can give very useful comments about anything because they have nothing to lose by calling a spade a spade. They can easily say, “This is a whole lot of trash!” Read more
Are you a decision maker?
“Maturity comes with the acceptance of responsibility.” – Dr Edwin L. Cole
Have you ever come across some people who seem to perpetually live in a state of confusion? They seem to love saying, “I don’t know, I’m just so confused…” They relegate themselves to a position where the circumstances around them are in control of what they do. Some even want to have their friends tell them what to do and until someone tells them, they don’t do anything. These people abdicate their role in their own lives to be proactive. They allow other people to build and shape their lives. Unfortunately their lives are often shaped in the wrong way for them and built too small to mean anything. It is a sad scenario, yet so common today. “Man will do anything in his power to avoid thinking.” – Earl Nightingale
The narrow path
In the woods, a narrow path jumps out of the blankness
And snakes underneath shadows of thorn trees
Into the hidden valley
It looks cleanly swept
As if many feet have journeyed upon it
In search of God-knows what
That which exists beyond the realm of the transient present
A search out of the frozen reality of being
The path closes at my feet,
And for some reason I wish I was the moon
Free to awaken dark azures
Beyond the thorn trees, I suddenly see the path opens widely Read more
